In the song “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” from Avenue Q, Princeton argues that we all make judgments based on race: “Not big judgments like who to hire; just little judgments like thinking that Mexican busboys should learn to speak goddamn English!”
Earlier today, our President expressed his thoughts about a new Spanish-language version of our National Anthem:
“I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.”
Last time I checked, the United States does not have an official national language, much like it doesn’t have an official national religion. It’s too bad those goddamn equal rights are always getting in the way of our President’s ability to govern.
Wetbacks need to swim back across the river. English is our language. All immigrants need to go back to where they came from. Most are here illegally anyway.
The president made a fair enough comment, but i’m sure there are other more important things going on in the world, so lets not get too excited people!! And so what if they have a spanish version? its quite unlikely anyway. Also Erika, that’s a really closed minded view for someone living in such a multi cultured country, but your entitled to your oppinion i guess!
I find people who seriously try to express a political opinion and use profanity or racial epithets amusing. Last time I checked we’re all immigrants here unless you happen to be ‘Native’ American. I love when people say “come back legally”. Do you know how ridiculously hard it is to do that? I think I’d be in “the old country”.
That’s funny… because there’s a bill in the Senate right now (I think it’s in the Senate…and the immigration bill is in the House)… to finally make English our national language. It should be, you know. It won’t change anything. Government papers will still be available in multiple languages and ethnic neighborhoods can still have signs in their native tongues. It’s just a way to say, “hey by the way, your life will be easier here if you speak English.”
Okay, but to me, it’s too similar to having a national religion. Yeah, most of the country might be Christian, but it doesn’t change the fact that the point of our country is to be free and to move democratically.
It’s true that English is the most common language right now, but remember that Spanish was the most common language in California just 200 years ago. And I think it’s possible (though unlikely) that Spanish will be the most common language again at some point in the future. Our country shouldn’t outlaw that from happening, just because you and I aren’t fluent in Spanish! I think that’s a reactionary thing to do. It’s motivated by fear.
Wow original! A webpage bashing President Bush. It makes me laugh when people misquote our president in order to make him appear unintelligent. He is the president of the United States. You never will be. He has gone farther in his life than you ever will. So really. In 20 years who will remember you?
As for the official language. If you like spanish so well move to Mexico and open a computer store. Then when your idiot girlfriend puts mints on her laptop you can give someone head to fix it.
