I got sick of my Droid Eris draining its battery and lagging all the time, so I upgraded early (via Craig’s List) to a Droid Incredible. It’s likely to have similar problems eventually since it’s also made by HTC, but it starts out with a faster processor, a newer version of Android, and a lot more storage space, so it should take longer to become obnoxious. My favorite feature of my “new” phone is that the camera has a flash; that should help make it a little more useful as a camera.
I thought about getting a non-HTC Android phone instead, but I honestly can’t get away from HTC’s enhancements for Android. Their mail client alone is worth dealing with their crummy phone book. And they really have made great strides from Android 2.1 to 2.2, an upgrade which the Eris would never receive.
This will at least tide me over until August, when I’m up for a real upgrade, and there should be a slew of 4G/LTE phones available.
I'm having the same problem with my eris….do you like that one?
Incredible is great! I did upgrade mine to the bigger battery, but only semi-necessary.
So far, so good with the Inc. (I already have an extended battery for it, because that's pretty much necessary with any smartphone.)
I'm super jealous. I want to throw my Eris against a wall I hate it so much. Did they get rid of the ridiculous address book problems in the Incredible?
So far, the address book works much better. The photos are staying synced, and it's not filling up all available memory with status updates. Try Craig's List or eBay if you really want one, but make sure it has a clean ESN. If you buy off Craig's List, make the seller meet you at a Verizon store so they can verify it and immediately activate it.
Currently communicating with someone who has offered to go to Verizon store with me. $150, reasonable enough, and that way I might be able to wait even longer to get a better 4G phone.
Yep, that's perfect. And you can sell your Eris to make up part of that cost. (If you don't want to deal with the hassle of selling it, just use http://green.ebay.com/instantsale/ to make it quick and easy.)
I really love my Incredible – it was well worth the upgrade from the Eris. Much more responsive – seems like it has more RAM or CPU or both – screen is nicely bigger and that makes the onscreen keys easier to type on.

Regarding the battery: Excluding the initial day of heavy use, I was getting about 20 hours out of my year-old "extended" battery (1750mAh). Out of curiosity, though, I decided to switch to the brand new stock battery that came with the phone (1300mAh). It's lasting about 30 hours.Part of that has to do with my use of the phone, but clearly it also means that my year-old "extended" battery is no longer healthy.
